This year’s topic was inspired by a Netflix movie, “Two Hearts” based on the book “All My Tomorrows: A Story of Tragedy, Transplant and
Hope”. Nineteen-year-old healthy Chris collapsed and died of an aneurysmal brain bleed, after which 5 near-death people lived because
they received Chris’s organs. Chris’s father, Eric Gregory, wrote the book to chronicle this miracle of science and how meeting the
recipients of his son’s organs filled a special need in his heart.
In 2024 there were 48,149 transplants, from 16,988 deceased donors and 7030 living donors. The success of Transplantation depends on tight collaboration between hospitals where donations occur, organ procurement organization and transplant programs and centers.Insite of these numbers, there are 103,223 people in the US waiting for an organ and every 8 minutes one more person is added to the list. Every day 17 people die awaiting an organ.
It is hard thinking about dying, but even harder thinking about organ donation. Furthermore, there are myths and concerns around
donations. Anyone and at any age one can be a donor, and can retract their wish at any time, it is a deep personal choice. One person’s donation can save up to 8 lives and improve 75 more. The impact of donation is HUGE!!
The goal of this seminar is to learn about the general principles and process of organ/tissue donation, barriers to successful transplantation and how it can be prevented/monitored and to dispel myths and fears. Specific diseases treatments will not be discussed. Having said so, it remains vital that one take care of their current body and remain healthy, to prevent becoming a premature donor or recipient.
